The Search for Meaning

The Search for Meaning

Dec 13, 2020

Passage: Ecclesiastes 1:1-2:1

Preacher: Allen Duty

Series: Ecclesiastes: A Puzzling Book for Puzzling Times

Category: Sunday Morning

Our author, presumably Solomon, will note that all in the world is vanity, a chasing after the wind. He sees this illustrated in the natural cycles of the earth - sunrise and sunset, prevailing winds, and the water cycle. He knows that all is vain and meaningless apart from God because he went on a quest for meaning himself, and he invites us into his search. He tries to find meaning in wisdom (the way of the philosopher), pleasure (the way of the hedonist), and labor (the way of the workaholic). But every potential path to meaning was a dead end, which many of us know from experience as well. We will learn that Christ alone brings meaning and lasting satisfaction to this life.
