Laying Down Our Rights

Laying Down Our Rights

Jan 26, 2020

Passage: 1 Corinthians 9:1-18

Series: Messy Church: 1st Corinthians

Category: Sunday Morning

Keywords: unity, messy church: 1st corinthians

Sadly, Paul's authority as an apostle had come under fire from some in the Corinthian church. Ironically, they seemed to be questioning his authority at least in part because he didn't act like other itinerant speakers - he didn't require people to put him up in nice houses and take care of his food and drink, he didn't bring along a wife, and he worked in secular employment to pay for his living expenses. Paul defends his apostolic authority, and then spends the rest of the passage defending his rights - and explaining why he has chosen to lay them down. The reason is that he would rather endure anything than put a stumbling block in the way of the Gospel. We'll be left with the question, "Am I willing to lay down my rights for the sake of the Gospel?"
