Making Mature Disciples

Our mission is to preserve and proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ in order to make mature disciples of all nations. As such, we seek to equip every member to be personally involved in disciple-making in our community and around the world.

Part of our responsibility as Christians is to consider how God is calling us to participate in his work of calling people from every tongue, tribe, and nation. While many of us will be called to stay and send to the nations, some will be called to go to the nations.

Faithful Goers and Senders

We have a long-term vision with respect to sending men, women, or families to the nations from New Life, and our process reflects that vision. We send men and women who are spiritually mature, healthy members of New Life who have been well-trained by our local church and other partner organizations. Every missionary sent by New Life can count on us for spiritual, emotional, and financial support before, during, and after their time on the field.

Furthermore, our vision is to send healthy teams of people (rather than individuals or lone families) to unreached and unengaged people groups around the world (rather than people who already have access to the Gospel).

If you believe God may be calling you to go to the nations, please review our sending process below:

The first step in our process is to explore a potential calling to the mission field. This would involve at least the following:

First, begin prayerfully reading God’s Word and learning about his heart for the nations. To help you with this process, we’ve made a list of Recommended Resources for you. There are helpful sermons, videos, articles, and books.

Next, consider taking Perspectives on the World Christian Movement which is offered every spring in conjunction with our local ministry partners. Perspectives is a semester-long course that involves attending weekly classes and completing a series of reading and writing assignments.

  • If you are unsure if you can commit the time and money required for Perspectives, we recommend you start by taking Awaken, which is offered every fall in conjunction with our local ministry partners. Awaken requires less time and a smaller financial investment than Perspectives, and would be a great start for anyone – including those who want to grow as faithful senders.

Participate in a Multiply Group, which is offered every semester through a partnership between New Life and Launch Global. Multiply is a 10-week discipleship training process that will teach you to share your testimony and the Gospel with non-Christians, and help you actually put your learning into practice through weekly evangelism in the community.

  • The reality is that if we are not making disciples in our own community, it is unlikely that we will be faithful or fruitful on the mission field.

Begin a dialogue with leaders at New Life about your potential calling to the mission field. We want to help you process your calling in the context of the local church, since it will ultimately be a local church (whether New Life or another local church) who sends you to the field. You can begin a dialogue with us by contacting us.

Initial Assessment

After exploring a potential calling to the mission field, you should schedule a time to meet with a member of our Missions Team to talk through your perceived calling.

If you have demonstrated commitment to New Life as a healthy member and evidence of a potential calling to the mission field through prayer, study, and fruitful discipleship, the Missions Team will most likely recommend that you enter our formal training process.

Formal Training

The next step in our missions process is formal training, which consists of the following:

Participation in our Goer Life Group

Goer Life Group is a 9-month commitment that includes personal prayer and study; a weekly meeting for training, prayer, and celebration; and multiple hours per week of cross-cultural evangelism in our community.

Regular meetings with a member of our Missions Team

The purpose of these meetings is to encourage you, pray for you, and to help you assess where and how God may be calling you to serve. During these meetings, further training and partnerships with potential sending organizations will also be discussed.

Once you have completed formal training, the Missions Team will most likely recommend that you receive a formal assessment.

Formal Assessment

During the formal assessment, candidates will fill out a series of questionnaires related to their perceived calling, their character, and any plans for training and partnership with outside sending organizations. Several recommendations are also required.

At your assessment, you (and your spouse, if applicable) will meet with a combination of New Life elders and members of our Missions Team to talk through your questionnaires. There are three potential outcomes from the formal assessment:

Recommended for Missionary Service

In this scenario, the assessment team believes that you are called to go to the mission field, and will work with the church body to ensure that you are spiritually, emotionally, and financially supported as you go.

Recommended with Conditions for Missionary Service

In this scenario, the assessment team believes that you may be called to go to the mission field, but certain conditions need to be met before you would receive New Life’s support. This could include, for example, the completion of formal training through a sending organization, or delaying the proposed timeline to allow time for growth in certain areas of your life or ministry.

Not Recommended for Missionary Service at this Time

In this scenario, the assessment team believes that while you may be called to go to the mission field at some point, there are one or more “red flags” that lead us to believe sending you at this time would not be best for you or for our church. This does not mean you are never called to go; it does not even mean you are not called to go now. It simply means that, for whatever reason, we lack the confidence to send you with our full support at this time.

We hope that you have been helped by reading about our sending process. If we can help to answer any questions you may have then please let us know!
